Emmanuel is an orphan under the care of his unemployed aunty Jared and Asenath’s parents are peasant farmers with hardly enough income to cater for their families, Sharon is an orphan and is under the care of her elderly grandfather, Abigail’s mother is fortunate to be in employment as a church worker. The challenges faced by these children and their families were further compounded when they were diagnosed with heart ailments by a cardiologist from Mater Hospital who visited their school to screen the students for heart ailments. A number were found to have congenital heart defects. These five were found to have Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).

Asenath Aluoch, Abigail Munara, Sharon Mumba, Emmanuel Obunga and Jared Mauti were born deaf and blind. They attend the Maseno School for the deaf and blind.
