This is a general check up clinic for men and women which entails screening for early detection of ailments such as cancer (breast, Prostate, Cervical etc), hypertension, diabetes, Cardiac conditions, Fibroids e.t.c.

The Well Woman Clinic recognizes the unique being of a woman and offers a solution to the rich mixture of stresses that present a unique set of problems for the woman.   If diagnosed early, problems such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiac conditions, fibroids can be treated with a high degree of success.   We also advise our clients on suitable preventive measures such as stress management, weight control, exercise, self breast examination etc, ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

Women are encouraged to visit this clinic at least once a year for a comprehensive physical examination and a full consultation with a medical specialist/gynaecologist. 

The tests to be conducted include Haemogram, Urinalysis, Pap Smear and Random blood sugar test.

The Pap Smear Test -   Cancer of the cervix is the most common gynecological cancer in women in Kenya today and leads to death of many women. By the time a woman notices changes that alert her to the problem, the cancer in most cases is already advanced. However, the onset can be detected by a simple test - the Pap Smear, and can be treated inexpensively before it becomes advanced.

The Pap Smear Test takes only a few minutes and the results are released within 24 hours. The Pap Smear Test would reveal uterine or cervical cancer at an early stage, when no visible symptoms or other damage is apparent. At this stage the cancer is completely and simply curable.

Breast Clinic  - Early detection is your breast protection.  Breast health is one area in your life where you can take control.   You can take control by talking to your friends, family and your doctor about your breast health.  Everyone should learn and practice Breast Self Examination starting from puberty and continue throughout life. 

A good place to start would be with your own doctor who can give you the required information.  At Mater Hospital we offer breast screening by doctors and nurses especially trained to teach breast health. 

About 50% of all Kenyan women are said to be at a higher risk of developing breast cancer and as such they should be extra careful about their breast health.
The hospital has a fully operational mammography unit and clients are encouraged to make it a part of their breast examination.   So far mammography is the most reliable method for breast screening and early diagnosis of breast cancer .To allow the service to be accessible to all women, we now accept walk-in clients for routine checkup on women above 40 years of age.  Privacy of the patient is maintained by having only lady radiographers to perform the examination.

Frequently asked Questions

• At what age should I have a routine mammogram?
  It is advisable to start having a mammogram once or twice a year after you have attained the age of 40 years. Younger women can also take a mammogram if their clinicians recommend.
• Does a mammogram hurt?
  It does not hurt at all. The breast is squeezed between two plastic plates, this may make you feel uncomfortable but it does not hurt at all. It is important not to book a mammogram a week before your menstral periods and during the menstral period. Many women experience pains in their breast due to hormonal changes. This will make a difference in your comfort level.
• Can I take a mammogram anytime of the month?
  NO.  We strictly observe the 10 day rule for all female patients within the child bearing age. If your mentral periods are irregular please do a pregnancy test before doing a mammogram. Lactating mothers should not take a mammogram until they have stopped breast-feeding
• Do I need to see my Doctor before coming for a routine mammogram?
  No.   You can walk in for a routine mammogram.
• My religion/culture does not allow me to expose my body to a man. What will happen when I come for the mammogram?
  Mammograms are only done by female radiographers since we wish to care for the feelings of our patients.

The Well Man Clinic recognizes that men over the age of 40 face an increased risk of developing conditions such as prostate cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiac conditions and gout among others.  The clinic therefore gives you a chance to detect these problems at an early stage when chances of successful treatment are highest.

Men just like women, are encouraged to visit this clinic at lease once a year for a comprehensive physical examination. 

The tests conducted include Haemogram, Urinalysis, prostate specific antigen, serum cholesterol, random blood suger, electrocardiogram (ECG), Uric acid levels and proctoscopy.
